Chapter 21

Wolf Whistle

Rane spun around just as the speckled snake slithered through the low gap underneath the webbing. Its mucusy pink mouth stretched wide open, flashing multiple rows of sharp curved teeth as it struck at her.

Rane kicked out and straddled the giant snake, pinning it between her legs. With both hands, she got a tight grip around its wide head, clamping its jaws shut. As she expected, the snake thrashed, trying to escape, and immediately got itself caught in the spider’s web.

Rane whipped the snake up and down like a battle rope. Its long body twirled, snagging sheets of spiderweb like a giant stick gathering a swab of cotton candy. Gradually, its struggles became weaker and weaker as the web swaddled it ever tighter.

When the snake was finally immobilized, Rane dragged it over to the grody old industrial refrigeration unit and tossed it inside. The thing hissed at her and snapped its jaws ineffectively, but it could no longer move. Its slitted metallic eyes glared at her from inside a spiderweb burrito.

Meanwhile, Salem was still restraining the freakishly giant spider. Rane held one of the doors open wide and pointed inside. “Room for one more.”

Salem pushed his hands together. The spider rose into the air, legs fluttering, bulbous abdomen spasming. In a nightmare of long legs and fangs, it sailed past Rane into the broken refrigerator.

“You two, cool it.” Rane slammed the refrigerator’s big double doors shut. Then she shoved her yellow steel rod through the handles, pinning them closed. Immediately, a frantic scrabbling and thumping echoed from inside.

She turned to Salem and jerked her thumb toward the doors. “Aaaand done.”

“Not quite.” He gave her a manic smile. With a single sinuous movement, he swept his arms out to either side, fingers spread, and gracefully brought them together. All around, piles of junk scraped closer as if pushed by invisible bulldozers. In moments, the refrigerator was buried.

Rane was only able to enjoy about three seconds of satisfaction before Ember’s shrill voice set her teeth on edge.

“Salem!” Ember wailed pitifully. “Help me! Over here!”

Rane rolled her eyes. “Better deal with that before she makes my ears bleed. I’m going to go find your stupid amulet.”

Salem tipped his hat to her and headed back toward the light.

After taking a long look around, listening the whole time to the giant spider battering against the inside of the refrigerator, Rane finally decided that Salem’s amulet was long gone. He’d just have to deal with that. She was done with this creep show.

Then she saw the wolf.

Its fierce golden eyes stared directly into hers. Hackles raised, its gray-and-tan fur stood on end, and its black lips drew back from sharp white canines. Head lowered, it crept toward her.

“Great,” she muttered. “Just what I need right now. More uglies to fight.” Pounding on stone feet, she strode toward the wolf, intent on finishing this with a single powerful punch.

As she approached, the wolf’s head unexpectedly lifted and its ears went back, as if it had suddenly recognized her.
